Immeasurably More
As some of you know, I am the media/sound technician for BCM, a campus ministry for Anderson University. It is my responsibility to make sure we have an 'all systems go' every Thursday night (mediashout lyrics, setup, sound, etc.) Honestly, I've been a little complacent with it lately, just taking whatever comes and not trying to improve it. I basically been giving myself a break between school, work, and Beyond. Of course it was totally unintentional, I'm a firm believer in giving it all I've got.Usually I like to get lyrics taken care of ahead of time and how many mics we're gonna need. Well it wasn't until Wednesday that I found out we were to have live drums. (FYI- BCM meets in Hunt Chapel of the Sullivan building on Thursday nights. It is a very small space and she doesn't handle drums very nicely, I've tried.) So Thurday rolls around and at 5pm I still have no songlist, nor band (4 hours to go). I called up Terri, our coordinator, to see what's up. I could tell that she was very stressed as she explained that the band was doing a show in Spartanburg that wouldn't be over until 7. I managed to get the songlist and encourage Terri that it wasn't her fault.
I must admit, keeping my cool was a challenge. Honestly, what could I have done? nothing, it was entirely out of my hands. All I could do is get the words ready, run a few mic lines, pray, and wait. I estimated that the band would be there at 8, but they don't roll in until 8:30. We frantically start loading in their equipment, and the rest is a blur. Next thing I know it's 8:45 and everything's set up. Not sure if God slowed down time there or what.. but it's true. I head up to the soundbooth to get a level on the guys, and to my amazement all of my EQ's were already set! (with the exception of the kick drum and bass guitar) it was flawless! To top it all off, it was one of THE best worship experiences we've had this year.
So what does this mean for media ministries? that we can sit around waiting for God to do all of the work? NO. We need to do all we can to create experiences that glorify Him. More importantly, He deserves excellence. If we do all of those things, we are allowing God to take it and do more with it.
I'd like to say upfront that I know this post sounds negative, but it's not intended to be. I simply wanted to use it to illustrate how, despite uncontrollable circumstances, God is constantly at work within us. To all of my BCM pals thanks for being there to help setup, it means so much. Special thanks to Terri for your concern. Also, I'd like to give a huge shout out to the Mel Washington Band. These guys were truly amazing, you should see 'em April 14 @ the Carpenter's Cellar. Show starts at 8pm.
